About the Artist
Hey y’all. My name is Kat Freeland (she/they) and I am an artist in NC who is fascinated by combining illustrative art and function into cozy, magickal, and fun designs. I have three feline biological children named Osha, Pauper, and Toulouse who live a life of wonder at the home I share with my wonderful husband.
Mostly inspired by fantasy, fiction, folklore, and animation, my pieces try to capture that magical feeling to create a fun nostalgic vibe of functional art. Over and over as a child, I was told I had to focus on “one thing” and not be a “jack of all trades” to get really good. And it causes some confusion, because there are so many forms of art, and different beauty in each one. But over time, I realized I loved taking my illustrations and putting them on different art forms that could be seen, and used, and held, and reused, and enjoyed over and over again. That’s when I began experimenting with my favorite ways to do that! I found out that my favorite ways are on pottery, nails, and shirts. I still make art prints for people who like to enjoy their art on a wall or from a distance, and that is equally as important! Your home should reflect your soul. But the mix of magic and creation that goes into functional design is endlessly fascinating.
I am mainly inspired by artists like Emily Carroll (Speak Comic), Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli), Fiona Staples (Saga Image Comics), Gustav Klimt (The Kiss, Life & Death), Ryan Coogler (Sinners, Judas and the Black Messiah) and Nick Cross (Over the Garden Wall), Vivian Xue Rahey (@vivxue on TT, realistic and magic nail sets). And tons more!
Art is important, the process that goes into creation is important. Art, in this day and age, is more important than ever. It holds magic, and passion, and feeling, and power. It is also incredibly political. If you’ve read this far and agree, please donate to the link below! I receive none of the profits from this, all donations go to bringing food into Gaza; to families who are resisting the ongoing and active genocide of the Palestinian people. Click here to donate. And thank you in advance.
